Try Digikam?

Digikam is pretty well thought of by people who are into photography (as I understand it), you might give that a try and see if it works.

My guess would be that there's something wrong with the automounting logic. Does "gphoto2 --list-files" work (from a terminal, without being logged into gnome)?

Also, some Kodak cameras can be switched between USB mass storage and PTP (gphoto). Can yours do that?
