Ubuntu ("oo-BOON-too") is a South African ethical ideology focusing on people's allegiances and relations with each other. A rough translation would be "humanity towards others". The Ubuntu operating system brings the spirit of ubuntu to the software world.

Linux is often used to refer to the operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds. However, technically, it refers only to the kernel, the core of an operating system. Many of the utilities and other programs were first developed by the GNU (GNU is not UNIX) project.
